Surviving

I am a patchwork quilt of not quite working parts

A jigsaw puzzle with three missing pieces

I am held together with hope and perseverance

Except when I am held together with anger and despair

My body holds exhaustion like a dam

Fatigue that burrows into my bones and weighs me down

Pain that wears away at my composure

Piece by piece

I push through this to smile

To make a joke

To write this very thing

Like an old engine pouring smoke

I burn gallons of fuel for every mile made

Dirty incandescent insistence

Fervent dreamer in rusty armor

My blessing and my curse
